MISCHA BARTON

Born: 24 January 1986
Birthplace: London, England
Best Known As: Marissa Cooper on TV's The O.C.

Actress and model Mischa Barton played poor-little-rich-girl Marissa Cooper in the popular television series The O.C.. Barton was born in the United Kingdom, moved to New York as a child and began acting and modelling before she was in her teens. In the late '90s she began getting TV and movie roles, including a small role (as the poisoned girl) in M. Night Shyamalan's The Sixth Sense (1999, starring Bruce Willis). She had the lead role in the adolescent love story Lost and Delirious (2001) and appeared in several episodes of TV's Once and Again, but it was The O.C. that made her a star. Between 2003 and 2006 she worked on the series and as a model for clothing and cosmetics companies. Barton's character, Marissa, was killed in a car accident at the end of the third season -- a plot point the actress inadvertently revealed prior to the episode's airing. Since leaving the series, she has focused on modelling and a career in films.

Avril Lavigne

Born: 27 September 1984
Birthplace: Napanee, Ontario, Canada
Best Known As: 'Skater punk' singer of "Complicated"

Originally packaged as a hard-edged Britney Spears for the skateboard set, Avril Lavigne was once described on her own website as "a skater-punk, a dynamic spirit, a true wild child." Lavigne was born in a small town in Ontario and grew up singing in church. At age 16 she caught the eye of record producers, who had plans to make her a pop star in the mold of fellow Canadian Shania Twain. Instead Lavigne teamed with songwriters and came up with hit tunes such as "Sk8er Boi" and "Complicated," the latter of which was featured on the show Dawson's Creek. Lavigne was only 17 when her debut album Let Go was released (2002); the album netted her five Grammy nominations. Her next album. Under My Skin, was released in 2004 and reached #1 on the Billboard album charts. In 2006 she announced a deal with the powerhouse Ford Models agency, and told Harpers Bazaar magazine she was hoping "to do those really beautiful ads with high-end products." Throwing her 'punk' tag even further out the window, she released the single "Girlfriend," a bouncy teen-pop ditty from her 2007 album The Best Damn Thing.

Lavigne married Deryck Whibley, frontman for the band Sum 41 and a fellow Canadian, on 15 July 2006.
